Progressive Design, Inc. is currently seeking a Civil/Structural Designer. This is a full time/direct hire position that is located in Midlothian, VA (Richmond, VA area).

Job Responsibilities:
- Civil/Structural/Architectural Designers are responsible for performing civil, structural and architectural design duties as stand-alone projects; or on multi-disciplined projects either independently or under the direction of a lead designer or engineer.
- Assist Senior CSA Designer in setting up the initial project constraints to include developing and coordinating project standard border template and ensuring that CSA drawings and designs are in accordance with company production and design standards.
- Perform field work and gather project information such as research existing drawings and equipment specifications under supervision of lead engineer or designer.
- Develop understanding of the project scope of work and develop ability to identify out of scope activities to be included as part of project management of change.
- Develop ability to coordinate between engineering disciplines.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of all deliverable products and services in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Assist lead designer maintain all document controls within the PDiWorx document control software.
- Develop ability to include review shop fabrication drawings and vendor submittals, answer RFI’s from contractors, performing on-site inspections to include special inspections.
- Assist in project close out to include organizing and cleaning up electronic files.
- Keep lead CSA designer and engineer informed of work load and any changes in project scope or additional services.
- Have a good understanding and implementation of PDI CAD standards.
- Develop/maintain PDI CAD standards under direction of lead senior designer.
- Develop the ability to create General Arrangements and Equipment Arrangements by working with Senior CSA Designers and Engineers.
- Assists senior designers and engineers in developing estimates, schedules, material lists, design concepts, design drawings and other project documentation per customer and corporate guidelines.
- Independently performs assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Receives technical guidance on all design aspects for projects.
- Limits of Authority- Has authority to perform less complex design duties which are checked for accuracy by others. May not exceed budgeted hours on task without approval of lead engineer or designer. May not change the scope of work or deviate from any part of the contractual documents without lead’s approval.
- Travel to site to assist in field work in industrial environments to collect design information and verify tie- ins, function and clearances in relation to other disciplines.
- Assist in research of design options and document findings for lead designer or engineer.
- Continue learning process by attending in-house seminars and continuing education opportunities outside of office.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
- 3+ years of heavy industrial experience.
- BECET or ASCET preferred
- Experience in an industrial chemical processing environment is a plus.
- Proficient in AutoCAD 2D and 3D Design with working knowledge of Revit, Advance Steel and RISA 3D (ideal but not required).
- Develop basic understanding and ability to research design codes i.e. IBC, ASCE 7, OSHA, ACI and AISC.
- Develop basic understanding of IBC with regards to building egress, stairs and ramp construction, building construction types, occupancy and fire protection elements.
- Knowledgeable of basic civil and structural material specifications to the extent that all information required for material purchase, fabrication and construction is reflected on the finished drawings.
- Develop a basic understanding of structural stability requirements, i.e. load distribution and load path.
- Learn to perform basic calculations using engineering formulas and skills for design such as foundations, grating, wall and roof panels, mezzanines, pipe bridges, etc.
- Develop basic knowledge and understanding of civil design to include topographic surveys, erosion and sediment control measures, storm water management, staking and site layout and underground utility plans.
- Develop basic knowledge of architectural features as it relates to industrial design such as doors, door hardware, roofing materials, flashing etc.
- Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office.
